The fifth-generation Corvette (C5, 1997–2004) runs a staggered tire configuration from the factory. The rear tires are intentionally taller in overall diameter than the front tires—a requirement enforced by the Active Handling system’s Electronic Brake Control Module, which monitors wheel speed differentials to detect slip. Selecting tire sizes that preserve this diameter relationship is the most important constraint in C5 tire selection, distinct from the ±3% individual tolerance that governs most vehicles.
For detailed wheel fitment including offset recommendations and brake clearance, see the C5 Corvette Wheel Guide. For quick-reference wheel and tire combinations, consult the C5 Corvette Wheel and Tire Cheatsheet.

All tires that shipped with the C5 from the factory have been long since discontinued, making replacement a natural opportunity to upgrade.
The Stagger Requirement
The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) expects the rear tires to be 0.5”–1.5” (13–38mm) taller in overall diameter than the front at all times. The Z06’s 0.78” stagger and the base C5’s 0.98” stagger both fall within this window. When a square setup (same dimensions front and rear) is run without disabling Active Handling, the computer continuously misreads rear wheel speed as slip. This triggers brake interventions and may set a fault that disables the system.
For street cars: maintain rear diameter 0.5”–1.5” taller than front. Track cars running a square setup should disable Active Handling. For all tire changes, calculate the overall diameter before purchasing to verify both individual tolerance and front-to-rear stagger. The tire size comparison calculator is handy in seeing staggered overall diameters.
OE-Spec Staggered Tire Pairings (17” F / 18” R)
The base C5 uses 245/45R17 front and 275/40R18 rear. The C5 Z06 uses 265/40R17 front and 295/35R18 rear as factory fitment. Both configurations pair a 17” front with an 18” rear. The following table shows all valid staggered pairings that keep each tire within ±3% of the factory diameter while maintaining the required front-to-rear stagger.

One of the challenges in finding tires for the OEM Z06 sizes is the availability of the 17” sizes. Narrowing the front by one step (255/40R17) improves turn-in response modestly but reduces front contact patch and opens up tire size availability. The OEM Z06 sizes are still a good starting point for tire searches. For individual size options, check the 265/40R17 tire size table and 295/35R18 tables.
18” F / 19” R Upgrade Pairings
A popular street upgrade moves the front to an 18” wheel and upsizes the rear to 19”. This combination opens up wider tire selection, improves aesthetics, and retains Active Handling-compatible stagger.

18” Staggered
Running 18” wheels front and rear eliminates the mixed-diameter raked look of the OEM setup and expands tire selection. The 18” size sits in the sweet spot of performance tire availability, covering all-season options as well. Nearly every major manufacturer covers 265–315mm widths in this diameter. The most common pairings are a 265/35 or 275/35 front matched to a 295/35 or 305/35 rear, maintaining stagger through aspect ratio rather than wheel diameter.

19” Staggered
The 19” same-diameter stagger is another common street fitment for the C5 platform. The lower-profile sidewalls sharpen steering response and reduce sidewall flex under load, at the cost of a firmer ride. Tire selection narrows slightly for all-seasons compared to 18” but the core performance categories are well covered in 265–315mm widths.

Square Track Setup (18” All Around)
Track-only builds that want tire rotation capability run a square setup with identical sizes front and rear. The most common configurations are 295/35R18 on 18x10.5” +58 (using four C5 Z06 rear wheels) and 315/30R18 on 18x11” +54 to +57. Both require Active Handling to be disabled.

The 295/35R18 and 315/30R18 are both within 3% of each other, making either a valid square option. The 295 on 18x10.5” is the lower-complexity choice with less camber in the front for fitment. The 315 on 18x11” requires a more precise offset choice and may still poke slightly in the front or contact the brake cooling duct at full lock.
Winter / Snow Wheels and Tires
For the truly afflicted that want to drive their Corvette year round in genuine winter conditions, dedicated winter tires are strongly recommended on the C5’s rear-wheel-drive platform. A common winter setup uses 17x8.5” F / 18x9” R wheels at moderate offsets with narrower tires—reducing contact patch width increases per-square-inch pressure for better bite through snow. Stagger must still be maintained for Active Handling to function in winter conditions where it matters most.

Important Fitment Notes
Diameter Stagger: Rear tires must be 0.5”–1.5” taller than front tires for Active Handling to function on street cars. The tables above show only pairings that satisfy this requirement.
SMC Fenders: The C5 body cannot be fender-rolled. If a tire contacts the fender, increase offset or add negative camber.
Wheel Width: Each tire size has a manufacturer-recommended rim width range. Running a wide tire on a narrow wheel produces an unsupported sidewall; running a narrow tire on a wide wheel produces excessive stretch. See the C5 Corvette Wheel and Tire Cheatsheet for validated wheel and tire width pairings.
Brake Cooling: The front cooling ducts adjacent to the brake calipers are in close proximity to wide front tires (18x11” with 305–315mm tires). Trimming these ducts to clear a tire reduces thermal management under sustained track use. Steering rack limiters are the preferred solution.
Suspension Lowering and Leaf Spring Clearance: Lowering via the transverse leaf spring’s mount bolts reduces compression travel and changes the spring angle, potentially bringing the spring ends into contact with wide rear wheel inner flanges at full compression. A full coilover conversion removes the transverse leaf spring entirely, eliminating this constraint.
