The 21-inch wheel is exclusive on the Equinox EV to the 3LT, 3RS, and RS trims. All ship from the factory with a 275/40R21 Continental CrossContact RX — a grand touring all-season with a puncture-resistant sealant compound on the inner liner that plugs small punctures automatically. This guide covers the OEM spec, what to consider when replacing your tires, and which categories to shop. For 19-inch LT-family wheels see the 19” guide.

OEM Wheel and Tire Specs

The 21-inch wheel on the Equinox EV RS is a 21x9.5” aluminum wheel with a +60mm offset and 6×120mm bolt pattern.

Continental CrossContact RX107H XLGrand Touring All-Season, TPC Spec, ContiSeal

The Continental CrossContact RX is a grand touring all-season optimized for crossovers and SUVs. The OEM variant includes Continental’s ContiSeal technology — a puncture-resistant sealant compound applied to the inner liner that automatically seals small punctures from nails and screws up to a certain diameter while the tire remains in motion. This serves as an alternative to run-flat technology, keeping you mobile after minor road hazard punctures. GM specified the extra load (XL) variant, rated at 107 load index, which is required to meet the vehicle’s load demands at the elevated inflation pressure. The factory tire is designated TPC Spec (Tire Performance Criteria Specification) which means a tire meets specific, high-performance standards required by General Motors (GM) for their vehicles’ handling, safety, and ride comfort. You do not need to buy a TPC Spec tire to replace your existing tires.

Before You Buy

Load index and XL rating. The Equinox EV RS weighs approximately 4,400–4,700 lbs depending on drivetrain. The OEM tire is XL-rated with a 107 load index. Do not replace with a standard load (SL) tire in this size. Match or exceed the 107 load index and specify XL when ordering.

Tire size. The OEM size is 275/40R21. The 285/40R21 is a wider alternative at +1.1% diameter, well within the safe ±3% threshold. Note that 275/40R21 is a relatively narrow fitment niche at 21 inches, and selection across all categories is more limited. If availability in a specific category is thin, the 285/40R21 opens up more options.

ContiSeal sealant liner. The OEM Continental CrossContact RX uses ContiSeal, a sealant compound on the inner liner that plugs small punctures automatically. ContiSeal is not a run-flat and handles nails and screws up to a certain size without requiring an immediate stop. When replacing, a standard tire without ContiSeal is fully compatible. If you want to retain the self-sealing capability, look for tires with a similar sealant liner technology. Note that ContiSeal tires require a plug-and-patch repair like any other tire for punctures that exceed the sealant’s range. The sealant does not eliminate the need for professional repair.

TPMS. The Equinox EV uses direct TPMS with 433 MHz sensors in the valve stem. During a standard tire swap the sensors stay in the wheel. Do not pay for new sensors on a routine replacement. After mounting, initiate a TPMS relearn through the vehicle’s infotainment or the vehicle status app.

AWD tire replacement. GM recommends replacing all four tires simultaneously on AWD Equinox EVs. The electric AWD system manages each motor’s output based on expected wheel speed, and tread depth differences between axles introduce circumference variance the system cannot fully compensate for. If replacing in pairs, consult your owner’s manual for the specific tread depth variance limit.

Grand Touring All-Season

The Continental CrossContact RX is a grand touring all-season, and that is the right category for most RS owners who want year-round capability without seasonal swaps.

Ultra High Performance All-Season

Ultra High Performance All-Season tires improve cornering response and wet grip over the OEM grand touring spec without sacrificing year-round usability. The Equinox EV RS’s instant torque delivery rewards a more performance-oriented compound.

The Continental ExtremeContact DWS line and the Michelin Pilot Sport AS lines are perennial favorites among consumers.

Summer Performance

For owners in mild climates who want the sharpest handling the platform offers, or who run a dedicated winter set, summer tires deliver meaningfully better dry and wet grip than any all-season. Expect a compound that loses grip below 40°F. Given the limited selection in 275/40R21, checking 285/40R21 availability is worth doing before settling on a category.

Winter

If you live somewhere with real winter, a dedicated seasonal swap is the correct answer. The 275/40R21 size has very limited winter tire selection. The practical recommendation for most RS owners is to run a dedicated set of 19-inch wheels with winter tires rather than sourcing 21-inch winters. A 245/55R19 mounted on a 19x8.5” wheel matches the LT-trim Equinox EVs, making for a clean seasonal swap with no meaningful speedometer error.

Visit TireRack for dedicated winter wheel and tire packages, including complete setups pre-mounted and balanced from 18” to 21” in diameter.

Performance Winter and Snow

Performance winter tires carry a 3PMSF rating and are fully winter-capable, but prioritize dry and wet handling alongside snow traction. If you prefer to stay on the 21-inch wheels through winter, this is the right category.

Studless Ice and Snow

Studless ice and snow tires maximize winter traction on ice, packed snow, and in severe cold. Dry-road handling is softer than a performance winter, but in genuinely harsh conditions these tires make a measurable safety difference.

Mounting and Installation

A few reminders specific to the Equinox EV RS:

  • XL-rated tires only. Do not replace the OEM 107H XL with a standard load tire in 275/40R21. The load rating difference at 42 psi is not negligible.
  • ContiSeal repair note. ContiSeal handles small punctures automatically, but larger punctures still require a professional plug-and-patch repair. Inform your installer the tire has a sealant liner so they can clean the repair area properly.
  • TPMS sensors stay in the wheel. Do not pay for new sensors on a standard tire swap. A valve stem seal inspection is normal and worth doing.
  • Relearn TPMS after the swap via the vehicle infotainment. Consult your owner’s manual for the exact menu path.
  • Lug nut torque spec: 140 ft-lb. Confirm your installer knows the torque spec and has a properly calibrated torque wrench.
  • AWD tread depth tolerance. GM recommends replacing all four tires simultaneously on AWD variants. Consult your owner’s manual for the specific allowable tread depth variance before replacing in pairs.
