The first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA, 1990-1997) established the modern lightweight roadster formula through exceptional handling dynamics rather than raw power. With curb weights ranging from 2,100 to 2,300 lbs and naturally aspirated engines producing 116 hp (1.6L NA6) or 128-133 hp (1.8L NA8), the NA Miata prioritizes momentum driving and tire selection becomes critical for extracting the platform’s full performance potential. This guide provides comprehensive tire compatibility information for both NA6 and NA8 variants.

For detailed wheel fitment including offset recommendations and brake clearance, see the NA Miata Wheel Guide. For quick-reference wheel and tire combinations, consult the NA Miata Wheel and Tire Cheatsheet.

Factory Tire Specifications

The NA Miata came with two different tire sizes depending on model year and trim level:

15x6" +45195/50R1522.7 in / 57.7 cm26 psiTire Rack
1995-1997 Special Editions

The factory tire selection reflects Mazda’s engineering priorities. The standard 14” balanced comfort, grip, and longevity for daily driving. The later Special Editions provided improved performance and aesthetics while maintaining the same overall diameter for speedometer accuracy.

When using a tire size different from the OEM specification, the rule of thumb is to maintain a ±3% variance in overall tire diameter. This ensures speedometer and odometer accuracy remains acceptable, ABS systems (if equipped) function properly, vehicle dynamics such as braking and handling are not adversely affected, sufficient tire clearance is maintained within the wheel wells, and clearance to suspension components is preserved.

The following sections list all compatible tire sizes within 3% of the factory diameter. Please note that these are theoretical tire size fitments based on diameter calculations. Having a size listed here does not mean a tire is manufactured in that size, nor that your desired tire model will be available in that size. This is especially true for the MX-5 and 14” and 15” tire sizes. Consult the Tire Recommendations by Category section to verify actual tire availability.

14” Tire Sizes for the NA Miata

The 14” wheel diameter is the original factory specification and offers excellent ride quality with minimal rotational inertia. The factory 185/60R14 has an overall diameter of 22.7 inches (57.7 cm). The 14” sizes below maintain this diameter within the 3% tolerance. Please note, most of the sizes in this chart will not actually be available and selection will likely continue to decrease as OEM wheel diameters have steadily increased since the late 1980s.

The 15” diameter offers superior tire selection for autocross and track use, with nearly every extreme performance summer tire manufacturer offering 200TW compounds in 205/50R15, 225/45R15, and 245/40R15 sizes. The taller sidewall provides better compliance over mid-corner bumps and progressive breakaway characteristics.

Common street setups use 195/50R15 or 205/50R15 on 15x7” or 15x8” wheels. Track-focused setups commonly run 225/45R15 on 15x9” wheels, which is the dominant configuration for autocross and time attack events.

The 16” diameter increases rotational inertia compared to 15” options, with mass moved further from the hub requiring more energy for acceleration and braking. Tire selection is limited in appropriate sizes, particularly in the 200TW category that dominates track use. The shorter sidewall transmits more shock to the chassis without providing grip benefits on the NA’s modest power output. Most 16” wheel and tire combinations will also be heavier than lightweight forged or flow-formed options available in 15”.

The enthusiast community consensus strongly favors 15” diameter for the NA Miata, with 16” reserved only for specific aesthetic preferences and those running power levels well above stock that may have specific reasons to move to a larger diameter setup.

Tire Recommendations by Category

The NA Miata’s rear-wheel-drive layout, lightweight construction, and momentum-focused chassis make tire selection critical for performance and enjoyment. The following categories represent the spectrum of tire options available for this platform.

Extreme Performance Summer Tires

For canyon carving, autocross, track days, and maximum dry grip, extreme performance summer tires deliver the ultimate in streetable cornering capability. These tires typically feature 200-treadwear ratings or lower, aggressive tread compounds, and stiff sidewalls that provide exceptional steering response and lateral grip. The trade-off is cost, reduced treadlife (typically 5,000-15,000 miles), and unsuitable performance in temperatures below 40°F (4°C).

Popular choices in this category include the Yokohama ADVAN A052, Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS, Falken Azenis RT660+, and Nankang Sportnex CR-S. These tires are purpose-built for competitive driving where ultimate grip outweighs daily usability. Note that modern 200TW tires often measure wider than their labeled size suggests, with section widths exceeding nominal specifications by 5-10mm.

Max Performance Summer Tires

The sweet spot for enthusiastic street driving and very occasional track use, max performance summer tires deliver exceptional dry and wet performance while maintaining the road manners expected of premium vehicle fitments. These tires typically feature 300-treadwear ratings (15,000-30,000 mile lifespan), refined ride quality, and predictable behavior that can handle spirited driving and daily commutes with equal capability. The trade-off is reduced ultimate grip compared to extreme performance tires, though they compensate with superior wet traction, longer tread life, and better everyday usability.

Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires

For drivers seeking year-round capability without sacrificing performance, ultra high performance all-season tires balance dry and wet grip while remaining usable in light winter conditions. These tires typically feature 500+ treadwear ratings, refined ride quality, and the quiet comfort expected of premium vehicle fitments. The trade-off is reduced ultimate dry grip compared to summer tires, though they compensate with genuine winter capability that summer tires cannot provide. These tires are engineered for drivers in moderate climates who want one set of tires capable of handling everything from spirited driving to snow-dusted morning commutes.

Winter / Snow Wheels and Tires

For those dedicated to Miata Is Always The Answer, in true winter conditions dedicated winter tires are essential. The NA Miata’s rear-wheel-drive layout and relatively low curb weight make proper winter tires critical for safe operation in snow and ice. We have searched high and low and to be blunt, your tire choices will be extremely sparse. A decent winter setup is 14x5.5” or 14x6” wheels with approximately +40 to +45 offset paired with 185/60R14 or even 175/65R14 winter tires. Alternatively, 15x6” wheels with 185/55R15 will yield higher tire availability. The narrower tire footprints maximize contact pressure to cut through snow and slush while the taller sidewalls provide additional protection against winter potholes.

Performance Winter and Snow

Performance winter tires balance winter grip with year-round usability. These tires feature aggressive tread patterns with sipes (small slits) to enhance snow and ice traction, while maintaining reasonable handling on dry roads. These tires are engineered for drivers in moderate winter climates who need reliable cold-weather performance without sacrificing too much summer handling.

Studless Ice and Snow

Studless ice and snow tires deliver maximum winter performance without metal studs, using advanced siping and tread rubber compounds that remain pliable in extreme cold. These tires excel in severe winter conditions including ice, packed snow, and slush, but trade away some dry-road handling and tread life. These tires are best suited for regions with long, harsh winters where maximum winter grip outweighs summer usability concerns.

Important Fitment Notes

While all sizes listed are within 3% diameter tolerance, tire size alone does not determine fitment. You must also consider:

Wheel Width: Tire manufacturers publish recommended wheel width ranges for each tire size. A 205/50R15 tire on a 15x7” wheel will have different fitment characteristics than the same tire on a 15x8” wheel. Narrower wheels create a “stretched” fitment with less sidewall support, while wider wheels provide a “square” fitment with better sidewall stability. See our NA Miata Wheel and Tire Cheatsheet for validated combinations.

Wheel Offset: Lower offsets push the tire outward toward the fender increasing the likelihood of rubbing. See the NA Miata Wheel Guide for offset recommendations specific to this chassis.

Suspension Height: Lowered cars have reduced fender-to-tire clearance. What fits on stock suspension may rub when lowered.

Tire Shoulder Profile: Modern extreme performance summer tires often run significantly wider than their labeled size. A tire labeled as 205/50R15 might measure 215mm or even 220mm in actual section width. Builders must account for this width when calculating fender clearance, particularly when moving from all-season tires to competition compounds.

Fender Rolling: For setups wider than 15x7” +30 or when significantly lowered, fender rolling becomes necessary. The front fenders feature a horizontal metal lip that must be folded flat to prevent tire contact during compression. For 15x9” wheels, a “flat roll” is mandatory. For 15x10” wheels, fender pulling or flaring is required.

Steering Rack Limiters: Wide wheels with higher offsets (e.g., 15x9” +35mm) may contact the front sway bar or lower control arm at full steering lock. Though not as common a modification on the MX-5, steering rack limiters prevent this interference by physically limiting rack travel, sacrificing a small amount of turning radius but preventing structural damage.

Additional Resources

Remember: Actual fitment varies based on wheel design (spoke profile, barrel shape), tire selection, suspension setup, ride height, camber, and fender condition. Always verify fitment for your specific combination before purchasing. When in doubt, consult experienced community members on forums such as miataturbo.net or miata.net. All information provided is based on extensive research and decades of community trial and error. Please evaluate and verify fitment data at your own discretion. As always, modify at your own risk. Check clearance during install, after install, and monitor on an ongoing basis. Failure to do so can result in vehicle damage or tire damage which can lead to bodily and emotional damage.
