The 20” wheel has been the standard for the Rivian R1S since its release in 2022. From 2022 to 2024, the Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor R1S came standard with the 20” All-Terrain wheel wearing a Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus in 275/65R20. Starting with the 2025 model year refresh, the Dual-Motor configuration moved to a wider 20” All-Season wheel with a Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT in 275/60R20, a slightly shorter, more efficiency-oriented tire. Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor trims continue on the All-Terrain setup. For 21” Road wheels (2022–2024), see the 21” tire guide. For 22” OEM wheels, see the 22” tire guide.

OEM Wheel and Tire Specs

The 20” All-Terrain and 20” All-Season wheels share the R1S’s 5×139.7 (aka 5x5.5”) bolt pattern and 64.1mm centerbore. The All-Terrain is a 20×8.5” wheel with a +48mm offset; the Gen 2 All-Season steps out to 20×9.0” at a shallower +42mm offset. Both OEM tires carry the “RIV” and “ELECT” sidewall markings, indicating Rivian-validated compound and construction tuned for the platform’s high load requirements and regenerative braking cycles.

The 275/65R20 Pirelli rolls out to 34.1 inches in total diameter while the 275/60R20 Goodyear comes in at 33.0 inches, more than an inch shorter. The shorter tire changes speedometer calibration, range estimation, and ADAS ride height offsets. Mixing them without software recalibration results in approximately a 3.5% speedometer error. Update the vehicle profile via Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires when changing between diameters.

The RIV sidewall designation indicates Rivian-approved construction. These tires have been validated by Rivian for the platform’s high unsprung weight, sustained torque loads from the motors, and the abrupt deceleration characteristics of aggressive regenerative braking. As long as you are shopping for a tire with an appropriate load rating, you do not need a RIV tire to replace your existing tires.

Before You Buy

Overall Diameter. Rivian’s software actively uses wheel diameter to calculate speedometer scaling, range estimation, ADAS camera offsets, and adaptive suspension damping. The two OEM 20” diameters are distinct software profiles. Rivian introduced a self-service wheel swap feature in software version 2025.06 that lets you update the vehicle profile yourself: Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires. Owners on earlier software need a Rivian Service Center visit to reflash the firmware. Choose a replacement tire that matches your OEM diameter and stays within ±3% of it.

Load rating. The R1S regularly weighs over 7,000 lbs at gross vehicle weight. Both OEM 20” tires are XL-rated with a load index of 115 or 116. Do not fit a Standard Load tire on this vehicle. Confirm your replacement is XL with a load index of at least 115.

275/65R20 alternatives. The 275/65R20 is closest to a 34x10.5R20, which is not a common flotation size. If you are replacing the All-Terrain Pirelli, you are locked into a fairly specific market segment. The 275/65R20 is a common light-truck and SUV size with solid aftermarket depth. The tire availability tables on this page include a couple of alternative sizes that are within ±3% of the OEM diameter. 285/60R20 and 285/65R20 are 10mm wider. The wider treadwidth fits both the 8.5” and 9” wheel within T&RA standards and increases the contact patch. These are best suited for owners prioritizing road presence and more rubber on the road. Flotation sizes are limited in the larger R1S tire profile. See the 275/65R20 for more compatible sizes.

275/60R20 alternatives. The 275/60R20 is closest to a 33x10.5R20 and similar to the OEM 22” Sport setup, again, not a common flotation size. There is reasonable all-terrain and all-season depth in this size. Stay in the 33-inch range and update the vehicle software if swapping diameter. The tire availability tables include 265/60R20 and 285/60R20 , both within ±3% of the OEM diameter. The tradeoff for the 265/60R20 is a marginally narrower contact patch for slightly better rolling resistance. For the 285/60R20, the penalty is slightly more weight and rolling resistance for a larger contact patch. Flotation sizes are limited in both R1S tire profiles. See the 275/60R20 for more compatible sizes.

TPMS. The R1S uses 433 MHz direct TPMS sensors. When your tires are swapped, the valve stem and sensor stay in the wheel — the installer demounts the old tire, mounts the new one, and the sensor is never disturbed. Your shop may charge a small fee to inspect or replace the valve stem seal, which is standard practice and worth doing. After the swap, recalibrate via Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires on the touchscreen.

Axle Tread Depth Tolerance. Rivian specifies no more than 2/32” difference in tread depth between left and right tires on any single axle. If one tire is damaged and the other on the same axle has worn beyond that threshold, both must be replaced. The torque-vectoring and stability systems rely on matched wheel speeds to function correctly.

Off-Road All-Terrain

While the factory 275/65R20 Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus is a capable OEM tire, there are many others in the category that are favored by consumers. Owners replacing the Pirelli with a like-for-like will want to stick to Off-Road All-Terrains. The following tires remain tuned for an SUV that will see pavement the majority of the time and are divided into two tables for the two different 20” OE wheel tire sizes.

On-Road All-Terrain

Despite being named the “All-Season” Wheel Package, the OE Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT is an On-Road All-Terrain tire. On-road all-terrain tires carry aggressive styling and provide real all-season capability without the road-noise penalty of a true off-road tire. For owners who do the bulk of their miles on pavement and gravel roads and want something quieter and more range-friendly than a full off-road tire, turn to On-Road All-Terrains.

Highway All-Season

For R1S owners who want to extend range and reduce noise beyond what any all-terrain tire can offer, highway all-seasons are worth considering. These tires have lower rolling resistance than an All-Terrain and a quieter tread pattern. Note that most tires in the Highway All-Season do not carry the full 3PMSF winter certification, but most carry a M+S Mud and Snow designation. Another tradeoff is significantly less off-road capability. If your R1S rarely leaves pavement and maximum range matters more than adventure credibility, this is a legitimate direction.

Winter

The R1S’s torque delivery is a significant asset in winter with instant, fully controllable power to each corner individually. All-terrain tires in the OEM sizes carry 3PMSF ratings and handle light snow reasonably, but they are not adequate substitutes for dedicated winter tires in serious weather or on ice. In those conditions, winter tires extend stopping distances and confidence in ways no AT tire replicates.

The most practical approach for a vehicle this size is a second set of 20” steel or alloy wheels with winter tires mounted and balanced. This avoids dismounting and remounting costs each season and protects your summer or all-season tires from cold-compound cracking. After fitting winter wheels, use Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires to update the vehicle profile if the winter setup uses a different diameter than your primary wheels.

Performance Winter and Snow

Performance winter tires deliver full 3PMSF winter capability while retaining meaningful dry-road handling. Best suited for R1S owners in climates with regular winters who want to carry a single set of wheels through the season without losing too much dry-road confidence. As of publishing, there are only Performance Winter and Snow tire options in “34”s.

Studless Ice and Snow

Studless ice and snow tires prioritize maximum grip on ice and packed snow using siped compounds that remain pliable in extreme cold. The tradeoff is reduced dry-road performance and faster tread wear. Best for owners in regions with long, harsh winters where maximum winter grip is the priority over all other variables. As of publishing, there are only Performance Winter and Snow tire options in “33”s.

Mounting and Installation

A few reminders specific to the R1S:

  • Enable Tire Change Mode before lifting. Navigate to Settings > Vehicle > Service and enable Tire Change Mode before using a jack or lift. Skipping this step risks the adaptive air suspension attempting to level the vehicle while it is being raised. Use the Rivian-specific frame rail jack points with a compatible puck adapter to avoid damaging the battery housing.
  • TPMS sensors stay in the wheel. The R1S uses 433 MHz direct TPMS sensors integrated into the valve stem. They are not disturbed during a standard tire swap. Do not pay for new sensors unless they are no longer working.
  • Update the wheel profile after a diameter change. If swapping between 33” and 34” tires, update the vehicle profile via Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires (software 2025.06+). Owners on earlier software may require a Rivian Service Center visit for a firmware recalibration.
  • Lug torque spec: 140 ft-lb (190 Nm). The R1S uses 22mm head M14×1.5 lug nuts. Confirm your installer is using a calibrated torque wrench to spec.
  • Axle matching. When replacing in pairs, the tread depth difference between left and right tires on the same axle must not exceed 2/32”. The torque-vectoring system requires matched wheel speeds at each corner.
