The 21” Road wheel was available across all 2022–2024 R1S trims as the factory’s efficiency-optimized wheel option. Rivian fitted these cast aluminum wheels with 275/55R21 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season tires. This size sits at the intersection of uncommon and inconvenient. The 21” Road delivered the lowest rolling resistance and highest EPA range of any factory wheel package, but the 275/55R21 size is nearly absent from the broader aftermarket. Rivian discontinued the 21” package for the 2025 refresh, citing exactly this problem.

If you are on the 21” Road wheels and need replacement tires, your options are narrower than most R1S owners and your decision comes down to either sourcing the Pirelli like-for-like or reconsidering the wheel setup entirely. For the 20” All-Terrain wheel, see the 20” guide. For 22” Sport or Range wheels, see the 22” guide.

OEM Wheel and Tire Specs

The 21” Road wheel is a 21×8.5” cast aluminum unit with a +48mm offset. It uses the same 5×139.7 (aka 5x5.5”) bolt pattern and 64.1mm centerbore as every other R1S wheel. At 79 lbs per corner of total tire and wheel weight, it sits between the lighter Gen 2 22” Range (76 lbs) and the heavier 22” Sport (83 lbs) in the efficiency hierarchy.

The 275/55R21 produces a 32.9” total assembly diameter, roughly the same as the 22” Sport and 20” All-Season. All three of these setups share the same 33-inch software profile in the R1S. Moving between any of these three wheel options does not change the vehicle’s speedometer calibration. Moving from any of them to the 20” All-Terrain requires updating the vehicle profile via Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires.

Before You Buy

Limited tire selection. This is the central issue for 21” Road owners. 275/55R21 is a size Rivian spec’d for the R1 platform specifically, and the aftermarket has never embraced it. Finding tires in stock from major retailers in the US is genuinely difficult. Pirelli is the only manufacturer producing meaningful volume in this size, and availability is subject to production cycles.

Typically we would recommend looking at alternatives, but theoretical sizes one section width narrower and one section width wider in the 21” have no tire availability. There was hope when the Rivian R2 was announced with a 21” All-Season wheel, however, the R2 tires will be “32”s instead of the R1 21” “31”s and will not fit. If you are on the 21” Road wheels and one tire is damaged beyond repair, sourcing a single replacement may involve a wait or a dealer order.

A practical alternative. Owners who find the 275/55R21 market frustrating have two paths. First, move to a 20” wheel package and use the common R1S sizes with substantial aftermarket depth. Second, move to the 22” Sport or Range wheels in 275/50R22, also a well-supported size.

Load rating. The R1S exceeds 7,000 lbs GVWR. All replacement tires must be XL-rated. Do not fit Standard Load tires.

TPMS. The R1S uses 433 MHz direct TPMS sensors in the valve stem. When your tires are swapped, the valve stem and sensor stay in the wheel — the installer demounts the old tire, mounts the new one, and the sensor is never disturbed. Your shop may charge a small fee to inspect or replace the valve stem seal, which is standard practice and worth doing. After the swap, recalibrate via Settings > Vehicle > Service > Wheels and tires on the touchscreen.

Axle Tread Depth Tolerance. Rivian specifies a maximum 2/32” tread depth difference between the left and right tires on any axle. The torque-vectoring system requires matched wheel speeds at each corner.

The Whole Enchilada

This is the entire list of 21” tires we have in our database in the OE size and in section widths above and below 275. As of publishing in April 2026, there are only 5 tire choices on Tire Rack in 275/55R21, with one of them out of stock. As mentioned above, general availability in 275/55R21 is thin. If you find stock, buy the tires.

Winter

For winter, the 275/55R21 size is a real liability. Options in dedicated winter compounds are non-existent. Owners in serious winter climates are best served by sourcing a second set of 20” wheels or 22” wheels which give access to a full range of winter tires in widely available sizes. The recommendation for winter is to move to a 20” wheel. See our 20” guide for tire sizing details.

Mounting and Installation

A few reminders specific to the R1S:

  • Enable Tire Change Mode before lifting. Navigate to Settings > Vehicle > Service and enable Tire Change Mode before using a jack or lift. The adaptive air suspension can attempt to level the vehicle while it is raised. Use the Rivian-specific puck adapter on the frame rail jack points — do not lift directly against the battery housing.
  • TPMS sensors stay in the wheel. The R1S uses 433 MHz direct TPMS sensors integrated into the valve stem. They are not disturbed during a standard tire swap. Do not pay for new sensors unless they are damaged.
  • Lug torque spec: 140 ft-lb (190 Nm). M14×1.5 lug nuts, 22mm socket.
  • Axle matching. Left-to-right tread depth on any axle must stay within 2/32”.
