The 20” Induction wheel is a $2,000 factory option on Long Range AWD Model Y. The Induction wheels came with 255/40R20 tires — summer, all-season, or winter depending on configuration. This guide covers what came from the factory, what to replace them with, and what changes if you want to swap to year-round tires. For 19” Gemini wheels see the 19” guide. For 21” Überturbine wheels see the 21” guide.

OEM Wheel and Tire Specs
The 20” Induction uses a 255/40R20 tire on a 20×9.5” wheel. Tesla fitted an all-season, a summer tire, and a winter option across the production run, all with acoustic foam liners and T0 Tesla designations.
| Tire Model | Performance Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 (M+S) SCT | Ultra High Performance All-Season | Tesla T0, early production, 2020+. SoundComfort Technology acoustic foam |
| Michelin Pilot Sport EV | Max Performance Summer | Tesla T0, later production, 2022+. Acoustic Tech foam |
| Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 | Performance Winter / Snow | Tesla T0, winter wheel package. PNCS acoustic foam |
The T# markings indicate the tire was tested and certified against Tesla’s noise, ride, and range standards, and that the tire manufacturer paid for that certification. You do not need a T0, etc. tire to replace your existing tires.
Note the load index: all OEM-equipped tires are 101W XL, not the 104W XL on the 19” Gemini. The lower aspect ratio of the 255/40R20 sidewall means less tire volume, so XL construction is doing more work per tire. Do not fit Standard Load (SL) tires on your Model Y.
Before You Buy
Tire size. The OEM size is 255/40R20. A 265/40R20 is a fitment-safe alternative — 10mm wider and approximately 1.1% larger in overall diameter, well within the ±3% threshold. 265/40R20 has been run by Model Y owners without issue at stock ride height. The wider contact patch may marginally improve dry grip and the increased treadwidth provides slightly better wheel protection at the expense of marginally increased rolling resistance.
Load index. Use XL-rated tires with a minimum 101 load index. The factory spec is 101W XL and all tires in this guide meet it.
Acoustic foam liner. The 40-series profile of the 255/40R20 leaves less sidewall to absorb road imperfections compared to the taller 45-series found on 19” Gemini wheels. The thinner sidewall transmits more vibration and cavity resonance into the cabin. This makes the foam liner more valuable on the Induction wheel than on the Gemini. All OEM tires came with it. Look for tires labeled “Acoustic” (Michelin), “ContiSilent” (Continental), “PNCS” (Pirelli), or “SoundComfort” (Goodyear) if road noise is a priority. Many Model Y owners choose to forgo the foam liner if not particularly noise sensitive.
Summer vs. all-season. The factory spec Michelin Pilot Sport EV is a summer performance tire. Summer compounds tend to lose grip below 40°F and below freezing they become a liability. If year-round usability or all-weather capability matters more than outright performance, grand touring all-season or ultra high performance all-season tires have wide availability in 255/40R20 and 265/40R20.
TPMS. The Model Y uses direct TPMS with sensors integrated into the valve stem assembly. When your tires are swapped, the valve stem and sensor stay in the wheel — the installer demounts the old tire, mounts the new one, and the sensor is never disturbed. Your shop may charge a small fee to inspect or replace the valve stem seal, which is standard practice and worth doing. What you should not pay for is a new sensor itself on a standard tire replacement. After the swap, recalibrate via Controls > Service > TPMS Calibration on the touchscreen.
Replacing in pairs. Unlike other AWD vehicles, you can replace tires on the Model Y by front or rear axle. You do not need to replace all four at once unless they are all equally worn. Rear tires on the Model Y wear faster than fronts. Rotate every 5,000–6,000 miles to keep tread depth even across all four corners.
Summer Performance
The Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires were summer performance rubber, and this is the natural home for the 20” Induction wheel. Summer tires offer meaningfully better dry and wet grip than any all-season, sharper turn-in, and shorter braking distances. The tradeoff is that they should not be used in temperatures below 40°F.

The Model Y’s 20” tire diameter is a common size across the industry which means you can find Max Performance Summer tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S all the way up to Extreme Performance Summer Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 that are factory fitted on the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Koenigsegg hypercars, putting tread life aside.
Continental typically provides a value alternative to the PS4S, with notably strong wet grip at a lower price point while Bridgestone’s Potenza Sport is a newer entrant that tests well in dry conditions and offers strong steering response.
Ultra High Performance All-Season
If you want to retain serious handling capability while gaining year-round usability, ultra high performance all-season is the right move. These are sharper than grand touring all-seasons and will manage light snow. They are not true winter tires, but they eliminate the need for seasonal swaps in relatively mild climates.

Continental’s ExtremeContact DWS06+ is an enthusiast favorite UHPAS and earns its name: the tread depth indicators show when you’ve worn past safe snow, wet, or dry traction thresholds. It is available in both 255 and 265 widths in Model Y sizing.
Grand Touring All-Season
If you want to convert the Induction wheels from a summer-focused setup to a comfortable year-round tire, grand touring all-season tires are available in 255/40R20. You are trading handling sharpness for longevity, quiet running, winter confidence, and often price as Grand Touring tires tend to be less expensive than their high performance counterparts. This is a reasonable choice if you use the car as a daily driver in a climate with real winters and do not want to manage a seasonal swap.

The available Grand Touring All-Season tires in this size are narrower in selection than other categories but Vredestein’s Quatrac Pro+ is the value standout, testing well against higher-priced competition. The Continental ProContact RX is listed here as an OEM reference though it did not come with 20” Induction wheels. It is the factory tire on some 19” Model Y variants and is available in 255/40R20, though currently on closeout pricing and likely to be discontinued.
Winter
If you live somewhere with serious winter, a dedicated seasonal swap is the correct answer. The stopping distance difference between a dedicated winter tire and an all-season on ice is significant. The 20” Induction makes for a compelling reason to run 19” wheels with dedicated winter tires. Swapping down to 19” gives you more tire sidewall, lower unsprung weight, and lower winter tire cost. See our 19” tire guide for sizing and visit TireRack for winter wheel selection.
Tesla’s OEM winter package for the Induction wheel featured the Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 — a performance winter tire with Pirelli’s PNCS acoustic foam and T0 Tesla designation, in the same 255/40R20 size.
Performance Winter and Snow
Performance winter tires were developed for European highway conditions where high-speed capability must coexist with snow traction. They carry a 3PMSF rating and are fully winter-capable, but prioritize dry and wet handling over maximum ice grip. For Induction owners who want to retain a sporty driving character in winter, this is the right category.

Studless Ice and Snow
Studless ice and snow tires deliver maximum winter grip using advanced siping and tread compounds that remain pliable in extreme cold. They excel in severe conditions — ice, packed snow, slush — but trade away dry-road handling and tread life. Best suited for regions with long, harsh winters where maximum winter grip outweighs other concerns.

Mounting and Installation
A few reminders for the Model Y:
- TPMS sensors stay in the wheel. The valve stem-integrated sensors are not disturbed during a tire swap. Do not pay for new sensors — a valve stem seal inspection or replacement is normal, a new sensor is not.
- Recalibrate TPMS after the swap via the touchscreen: Controls > Service > TPMS Calibration.
- Lug nut torque spec: 129 lb-ft. Confirm your installer knows the torque spec for your Model Y and has properly torqued all lug nuts.
